Complex Surgery at Vivekananda Hospital Gives 51-Year-Old Patient a New Lease of Life

Lucknow– In a dramatic medical turnaround, doctors at Vivekananda Hospital successfully saved the life of a 51-year-old Sultanpur resident who had been incorrectly treated for tuberculosis for years, even as a dangerous fungal infection silently worsened inside his lungs.

The patient, Munna, had long suffered from chronic cough and difficulty in breathing. Despite persistent symptoms, he continued receiving TB medication — but instead of improving, his condition deteriorated further.

His family eventually brought him to Vivekananda Hospital, where specialist Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Bhavatosh Biswas examined his case. A CT scan and chest X-ray revealed the alarming truth: a severe fungal infection had spread across all three lobes of his right lung, forming a large fungal ball in the lower lobes.

A High-Risk Surgery with Life-Threatening Challenges

The surgical team soon realised the enormous risk ahead. The fungal mass was dangerously close to major blood vessels, the trachea, and the heart — raising the possibility of massive bleeding or organ damage during removal.

Despite the complexity, Dr. Bhavatosh Biswas, pulmonologist Dr. Mohammad Amir, and the surgical team decided to proceed, determined to save the patient.

What followed was a five-hour, high-precision surgery, where doctors meticulously removed the fungal ball from all three affected lung lobes while safeguarding critical structures.

A Successful Outcome Against the Odds

The operation was completed successfully, giving Munna a new chance at life. Doctors confirmed that the lung was cleared of the infection, and the patient has shown significant improvement post-surgery.

Hospital secretary Swami Muktinathanand praised the team, calling it “a highly complex surgery performed with exceptional skill and dedication.” He added that Vivekananda Hospital has always upheld its principles of compassion and patient service.

The case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely specialist intervention — and stands as a testament to the expertise and commitment of the medical team that turned a near-fatal situation into a story of hope.
